Gratitude and Growth at Sunnybrook: Lessons from the Harvest

How Thanksgiving reflections shape farming, leadership, and community

Thanksgiving gratitude and growth shape farming and leadership across Canada. As we reflect on our Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on two powerful forces that shape both farming and leadership: gratitude and growth.

In agriculture, the harvest is a time of hard-earned reward. It represents months of planning, long hours, risks taken, and resilience tested. But alongside the yield comes perspective. Farmers know that every harvest, big or small, is a gift. Weather, timing, soil, and countless other factors lie outside our control, yet year after year we gather what the land provides. It’s a reminder that while striving for growth is important, being thankful for what we already have is just as vital.

This balance between gratitude and growth also applies in life and leadership. We set ambitious goals, pursue new opportunities, and move forward with a clear vision. But the pursuit of “what’s next” should not overshadow the blessings of today. The truth is, what we take for granted today is often the very thing someone else is striving toward. Recognizing this keeps us grounded, humble, and connected to the bigger picture.

I was reminded of this recently at a family funeral. While it was a time of loss, it was also a time of deep gratitude… gratitude for family, for health, for community, and for the opportunity to be present. These moments teach us that success isn’t only measured by the milestones achieved or goals surpassed, but also by the relationships we form and the communities we build along the way.

Thanksgiving Gratitude and Growth in Farming and Leadership

At Sunnybrook, we drive growth by innovating our products, building stronger partnerships, and strengthening our team. Just like in farming, we know that lasting growth starts with a foundation of gratitude. I am thankful for our customers, the farmers who put their trust in us. I am thankful for the mentors, colleagues, and peers who push me to think bigger. And I am thankful for the team members whose dedication and grit ensure that our shared vision moves forward.

As leaders, farmers, and community members, Thanksgiving reminds us to embrace both sides of the equation: to set bold goals for tomorrow, and to give thanks for the harvest of today. Gratitude grounds us. Growth propels us. Together, they ensure that our work has both purpose and impact.

In many ways, this season reflects our core values at Sunnybrook. Grit reminds us to persevere through challenges. Growth pushes us to continually improve. Innovation drives us to create better solutions for farmers. Authenticity keeps us true to who we are. And Reputation reflects the trust we earn by serving with integrity.

This Thanksgiving, may we all take a moment to appreciate the blessings around us, our families, our communities, and the opportunities we’ve been given, while looking forward with optimism to the growth yet to come.

I hope you had an amazing Thanksgiving.
